We all know that sugar is bad for us. It causes a sharp rise followed by a steep drop in levels of insulin, which quickly spirals into a whole host of problems, including depression of the immune system and eventually diabetes. As if this were not enough, this empty calorie also damages our teeth and helps pile on the pounds.
And yet we found ourselves, again and again, reaching for the forbidden chocolate brownie, marshmallow bar, or ice cream cone. Sugar has a cunning way of luring us into its sticky clutches until we are trapped in a cycle of uncontrollable binging. Aware we might be, yet we find we cannot resist; sugar has wormed its way into our metabolism and we are too dependent on it to wean ourselves off it.
Isn't there any way at all I could enjoy sweet stuff without neglecting my health?
I was airing this dilemma to a friend of mine when she mentioned XYLITOL, sometimes known as wood sugar or birch sugar. I had never heard of it before. My curiosity turned to scepticism when she said XYLITOL has a GI of 7. Did this mean that there actually existed a kind of sugar with such a fantastically low GI that it was as appropriate to a healthy diet as apples and bran flakes? Did this sugar then not spark off a craving for more, and more, and still more? Was it just that sugar and not some new artificial sweetener replete with dangerous side effects? Did it taste just like sugar? I was intrigued.
I had to find out more. It seemed incredible that a form of sugar existed that looked, tasted, dissolved and felt like the real thing, and yet had no negative impact whatsoever on the metabolism. What I found out not only confirmed what I had heard, it exceeded my wildest dreams. XYLITOL is a five carbon sugar alcohol, about as sweet as fructose, which derives from a number of sources, including corn, birch wood, mushrooms, and plums. At only 7 calories a gram, it lets your body burn off the excess energy almost twice as fast as table sugar. And that's only the beginning. XYLITOL is so replete with medicinal properties that it is used by doctors to heal diseases such as osteoporosis, ear and upper respiratory infections, and infections of Candida yeast. It promotes oestrogen levels in the body, building healthy bones.
I researched further. Not only does XYLITOL not harm teeth by causing plaque, it actually helps repair minor cavities caused by dental caries.
There is definitely a need in Britain for a product like xylitol. Proven to fight cavities, safe for diabetics, 100% natural, excellent in weight management, with a low GI, and replete with an array of other health benefits, it is a product that is greeted with enthusiasm by the increasingly health-aware public.
DO NOT GIVE ANY XYLITOL, OR XYLITOL PRODUCTS TO YOUR PETS AS THIS CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS AND HARM YOUR PETS.
